No matter the speed, the interior is a delight. The leather seats and roof fabric are soft to the touch, and each offers a seemingly endless array of color options. The rear seats aren't just for insurance reasons. Maserati has kept the incline angle identical to the coupe, and the result offers a surprisingly tolerable space, though your knees will touch the front seats. Should luggage be more important than rear passengers, Maserati offers its own bespoke set of trolley cases and beauty bags with straps to cinch them down onto the rear seats. Special too is the standard, mp3-ready Bose audio system. It uses a mixture of 12 speakers to battle the noise from outside, including one in the dash, and two tweeters and subwoofers in the doors.

The snow has cleared by the time we return to the city, begging for an open top. From the infinite ellipsis of micocars lining the streets, people stare; some exclaim. They've heard the GranTurismo some time ago. A long, stone-lined tunnel ahead culminates the brief drive. And as the Maser enters high in the rev counter, its sound is expanded as if plugged into an amplifier set to 11 -- a deep and sinister concoction of exotica and Motown permeating all. It's this sound you remember long after you've turned the car off and flown home.
